Mechanism of action
MOTS-c is a peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Its central research property is activation of the AMPK energy-sensing pathway, linking it to cellular metabolic homeostasis and the folate–AICAR–de novo purine biosynthesis axis.
Under metabolic stress, studies report nuclear translocation of MOTS-c where it influences stress-adaptive gene expression. It is investigated in metabolic and mitochondrial-biogenesis models only.
